Description:
Study abroad in Egypt! This course examines the ancient pyramids, temples, tombs, art, and history of ancient Egypt. During the 17 days of the course we will visit 36 archaeological sites and four museums that highlight all aspects of ancient civilization.
Highlights include visits to:
- Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, Dashur, Meidum, El Lisht, & Zawiyat Aryan
- Temples of Abu Simbel, Karnak, Luxor, Philae, Deir el Bahri, Edfu, Ramesseum, Medinet Habu, Kalabsha, Esna, Kom Ombbo, Sebua, Amada, Seti, and Abu Ghurab
- Tombs of Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Tombs of the Nobles, Noble Tombs of Aswan & El Kab
- Ancient Cities of Deir el Medina & Elephantine Island
- Museums including Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Luxor Museum, Nubian Museum, Elephantine Museum
As well as:
- Balloon Ride over Theban West Bank of Nile and Valley of Kings
- Camel Rides to distant sites
- Desert Jeep Safari
- Bedouin Camping
- Bazaars & Souks
- Islamic Cairo
- Optional 4-Wheel Desert Safari
Also enjoy Middle Eastern food and zar music, and learn about the rich 6,000-year history of Egypt!
The goal of this course is for students to gain an understanding of Egyptian archaeology, art history, and history from the Predynastic period through the Roman occupation and Islamic conquest. This is accomplished through direct experience —visiting ancient ruins and studying art and architecture with a UCSD professor. Join us!
Basic Information:
- Credit: Eight unit, upper division anthropology credit at UCSD. Option of additional four units for a total of 12!
- Approximate Cost:
University Summer Session tuition (at UC Student, UC Graduate Student, or non-UC rate) for eight to 12 units, Summer Session registration fees, and $2490 in special course fees. Your course fees will cover all ground transportation in Egypt (in private van, sleeper train & jeep), entrance fees to sites and museums (with International Student ID card), hotels, breakfasts, lunches, and introductory/farewell dinners. It also covers some special activities such as desert & oasis safari, camel excursions, and a balloon ride. Course fees do not cover airfare and personal costs.

- Eligibility: Anyone of legal age, including UC undergraduate and graduate students, students of other colleges & universities, and non-students.

- September 10: Egyptian Museum, Khan El Khalilli Bazaar, Islamic Cairo (Night: Bahariya)
- September 11: Bahariya Oasis, Jeep Safari in Black & White Deserts (Night: Bedouin Camping)
- September 12: Bahariya Oasis sites, overnight sleeper to Aswan (Night: train)
- September 13: Noble Tombs, Camel ride to St. Simeon, Nubian museum (Night: Aswan)
- September 14: Unfinished obelisk, Kalabsha, High Dam, Felucca ride, Elephantine (Night: Aswan)
- September 15: Aswan Souk, Sebua & Amada temples, Abu Simbel (Night: Abu Simbel)
- September 16: Abu Simbel, Philae Temple (Night: Aswan)
- September 17: Kom Ombo, Edfu, Esna temples, El Kab tombs (Night: Luxor)
