Cautionary Notes:

• Not all color names are understood by web browsers. On mine, "olive" works, but "peach" produces bright green, for example. Once you decide on a color, if it really matters to you, it is better to use the numeric code than the color name.
• Different browsers may not interpret colors, especially named colors, quite the same way. Try to examine your final page on more than one computer. In my experience, Macintosh colors are generally lighter than PC colors.
• In general, colors designated by combinations of the codes 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF are "safe" for use with reasonably similar results on virtually all machines. (E.g., FFCC99 will be vaguely peach-colored on both a PC and a Macintosh.) Unfortunately, the color names rarely correspond with the "safe" palette.
• Colors may vary with the user's system settings.
• It makes no difference in the color codes (or names) whether you use upper case or lower case.
• Remember that text and links must be legible against the background you select, so be sure to pick colors for them too. The same color codes are used.

The most critical text on this page is displayed in both black & white in order to remain legible regardless of the colors you select. The color codes below the input boxes help show how a given background would look with text in some of the named colors. The table at the end provides examples of more of the colors that can be designated by name.
