The goals are (1) learn how to use topo maps, (2) start to get a sense for visualizing using topo maps, (3) introduce you to the use of different coordinate systems (here, LAT/LONG and UTM). There are others.

Reading topo maps - online book more than you thought there was to know...
The book goes into lots of related material, from best ways to fold a topo map to navigating on the ground using aerial images and compass etc. Wish I'd found it years ago.
